Form 1099-DA TIN / Name Mismatch & CP2100 Guide

For digital asset proceeds and related basis information, clean up the recipient name and TIN before filing, understand what a CP2100/CP2100A mismatch means, and use the appropriate B Notice or backup-withholding workflow if the IRS later reports a problem.

Before filing

Protect the recipient TIN from spreadsheet conversion, preserve leading zeros, remove accidental whitespace, and keep the legal name consistent with the taxpayer information you collected.

2

If a mismatch notice arrives

Compare the IRS listing with your records. If they agree and the IRS says the name/TIN does not match, determine whether this is the first or second incorrect-TIN notice for the account and follow Publication 1281.

3

If withholding applies

The current IRS backup withholding rate is 24%. Missing or obviously incorrect TINs can trigger immediate withholding; mismatch notices use the B Notice timing described by the IRS.

Can IRS TIN Matching help with Form 1099-DA?

IRS TIN Matching may be relevant before filing. The current IRS Backup Withholding B Program specifically lists Form 1099-DA among the forms whose payers may be eligible for TIN Matching. The payer must still meet the IRS application and authorization requirements.

Form 1099-DA TIN mismatch FAQs

What TIN field should I review for Form 1099-DA?

The bundled 1099-DA CSV template includes Recipient Taxpayer ID Number. Review the matching recipient name fields at the same time because CP2100/CP2100A mismatches concern the combination of the name and TIN.

Can a clean 1099-DA CSV still receive a CP2100 or CP2100A?

Yes. Structural CSV validation can catch formatting problems, but it cannot determine whether the recipient name/TIN combination matches IRS records. A file can be structurally valid and still contain a name/TIN mismatch.

Should I file a corrected 1099-DA only because a payee returns a corrected TIN?

Publication 1281 says not to file a corrected information return solely to change a name/TIN combination unless you are also changing the dollar amount reported. Review the current 1099-DA instructions and Publication 1281 for your exact situation.

Where does backup withholding appear on Form 1099-DA?

If Form 1099-DA includes a federal income tax withheld field in the current layout, use the current form instructions to report required withholding. The backup-withholding obligation itself comes from the federal withholding rules, not from the CSV checker.
