California 592 filing periods and withholding notes
For tax year 2026, California Form 592 has four withholding periods: January–March, April–May, June–August, and September–December. This free calculator identifies the filing period from the payment date and displays the normal filing/payment deadline.
The standard California nonresident withholding rate is generally 7% (unless a written authorized reduction applies), but rules differ for backup withholding and certain recipients. The first $1,500 of calendar-year California-source payments is optional for non-backup withholding, and withholding must begin once total payments exceed the threshold. Because there are nuances regarding amounts subject to withholding, the tool applies 7% to the amount you explicitly enter as subject to withholding, without automatically subtracting $1,500. It does not determine whether Form 592, 592-PTE, 592-F or 593 is the right form.
