For withholding agents that pay U.S.-source income to foreign persons. A 1042-S is not a general-purpose 1099: reconcile treaty and withholding codes against the actual foreign-payee records.
A U.S. company pays a licensing royalty to a non-U.S. business. Its tax department must associate the payment with the correct recipient, income code, withholding rate and treaty documentation before preparing a Form 1042-S.
Form-specific check: Reconcile gross income, exemption or treaty claims, and federal withholding. The recipient’s Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 status data must reflect the actual documentation. Do not substitute the ordinary domestic Form 1099-NEC process.
Before importing: Compare Form 1042-S totals with the withholding agent’s foreign-payment ledger and related Form 1042 workpapers.
Prepare your filing data with the software, then submit an eligible CSV through the free IRS IRIS Taxpayer Portal using your own IRIS account. The IRS does not charge a portal filing fee.
