FIRE-to-IRIS Migration File Checker
Find out whether a local file resembles a FIRE fixed-width submission or a spreadsheet CSV. Get practical next steps for preparing information returns for IRIS.
Inspect a legacy filing file
The checker reports only file structure and aggregate record counts. It does not display names, SSNs, or taxpayer identifiers and does not send data to a server.
FIRE to IRIS: what can be migrated?
The older IRS FIRE system used form-specific file specifications and fixed-width record formats. IRIS has different form-level data requirements and different submission workflows. A valid FIRE file cannot generally be uploaded to IRIS without conversion and validation against the appropriate tax-year schema.
This migration inventory identifies broad file characteristics, possible FIRE record markers and line-length patterns. It does not convert FIRE data into IRIS, verify payer/payee identities, or assert that a file is IRS-valid. Use official IRIS instructions and your desktop software for filing-ready output.
