Rejected filing recovery

IRIS Rejected Transmission Recovery Guide

A rejected IRIS transmission is different from an accepted return that later needs correction. Use the acknowledgement to find the cause, repair the source data, and prepare a clean filing attempt.

Recovery workflow

Five steps after IRIS rejects a transmission

1

Download the acknowledgement

The Submitted Forms screen lets you download the acknowledgement. IRS guidance says the acknowledgement identifies the rejection error.

2

Return to the source data

Do not patch multiple copies of the CSV by hand. Correct the spreadsheet or source-system record that produced the bad value.

3

Check structure and formatting

Confirm headers, column order, row width, identifiers, dates, amounts, codes, and the current IRS template layout.

4

Revalidate before resubmitting

Use the free form validator and formatting checklist to catch obvious structural problems before returning to IRIS.

5

Submit through the current portal workflow

Corrections through Correct/Replace are reserved for Accepted or Accepted with Errors transmissions. A rejected transmission should be recovered from its acknowledgement and current IRS instructions.

Common reasons to inspect first

  • ✓Wrong or outdated CSV template/header layout.
  • ✓Required values missing or data placed in the wrong column.
  • ✓TINs or account identifiers changed by spreadsheet formatting.
  • ✓Dates, amounts, codes, or indicators not formatted as the current IRS template expects.
  • ✓Known IRIS portal issue rather than a data issue.
