Read the final status, not the local expectation
Do not decide based on what you think should have happened. Use the IRS acknowledgement and record/submission status.
The simplest rule is status-first: accepted records are corrected; rejected submissions are replaced. Problems occur when filers use the words interchangeably and resend data that the IRS already accepted.

Preserve the accepted Receipt ID and follow the current one-step/two-step correction procedure for the field that changed.
Fix the rejection and use the replacement path required by the Portal or A2A workflow.
Keep accepted items out of the replacement. Correct accepted-with-errors items separately and replace rejected items.
Tie the correction or replacement back to the original source record and retain the audit trail.
This can create duplicate information returns. Use a correction when an accepted return needs a data change.
A rejected submission was not accepted as the original return. Use the rejected/replacement workflow.
Keep submission identifiers with the source records; they are critical when reconciling corrections and support questions.
Some identity changes require a different sequence than an amount change. Follow current Publication 5717/5718 instructions.
Wait for the final result before creating a correction or replacement unless current IRS guidance specifically directs otherwise.
Deleting a local record does not erase an IRS-accepted return. Use the correction process.
Build the correction from the complete corrected source record and follow the IRS correction method that applies to those changes.
