MeF is not IRIS

IRS MeF is a system for certain tax returns such as Form 1042 and Form 709. Form 1042-S information statements are a different form family and are handled through the appropriate information-return filing route.

Before preparing an MeF return

Determine the tax year, return form, available schema, required schedules, taxpayer authorization and electronic filing eligibility.

Ask about supported returns

Form-specific capabilities depend on the current IRS schema and any required software or transmitter acceptance. ERICH can discuss preparation requirements and availability.
